The local dealer shop told me when they've had about 10K gallons worth of diesel ran through the engine the filter will be plugged up. Mine plugged shut at 150K miles and needed replaced. You can't turn off the re-gen without removing the exhaust filter or is will plug shut. Email is in profile if you have any questions or would like to have a chat about this. A programmer like a Bully Dog will not allow you to do an egr or dpf delete. Any of the trucks I have done dpf deletes on have gained at least 3 mpg and alot of guys are gaining more mileage than that.

These were both trucks that were just daily drivers that didn't tow anything so if you were hauling heavy loads you may gain slightly more due to less engine load when towing. I have had a couple guys just try some good tuning on 6.4 trucks without removing dpf and although the trucks had more power they both thought they only gained about 1 mpg.

Makes it easier then damaging sensors trying to remove them out of factory exhaust that has some miles on it and if you ever want to switch it back, just unbolt the delete pipe, install factory exhaust, plug in sensors and program back to stock. Another point about H&S tuners is you do not have to put any of the sensors in the exhaust back in the delete pipes. You wouldn't believe how much better your truck will run after. Of course I am biased when it comes to this topic because this is part of my company business but I wouldn't own a truck like this without doing a dpf delete. H&S has the ability to run stock low end fuel settings for this reason. This is also harmful to the dpf and they are quite expensive. It was running like that all along, just the dpf was catching a lot of it. I have seen trucks that guys have been driving around with hot tunes from certain companies with dpf intact and once the removed it they couldn't beleive how much it smoked. Trouble with that is with dpf in place you wont see much more smoke because they catch so much of the soot, it will just regen more. A tune that adds too much fuel on low end will make more smoke and cause dpf to regen more probably giving you power but you wont gain economy at all.

If you are wanting to use a programmer without removing dpf be careful. Do a search on some diesel truck forums and the three most popular tuners for the 6.4 will be H&S, Spartan and SCT (with custom tunes ). I have probably done dpf deletes on about 20 6.4 powerstroke trucks now and they seem to be one of the best out there. They give you tunes for stock exhaust as well as tunes for dpf and egr delete. I really like H&S programmers for the 6.4 powerstroke. If you are looking for fuel economy it is going to be hard to gain a whole lot without removing the dpf. Newer trucks have much more complicated engines and managment systems and in my opinion that makes it even more important to run tuning from a reputable company that has experience and a lot of good feed back on your truck. Quality of tuning can vary greatly between companies depending on what parameters they are changing and how they are changing them. Craigslist is an excellent place to look. I am sure some will argue but unless you are wanting to do live tuning (writing/downloading new programs ) and tweaking adjustments on the fly that any chip should meet your need. For the AVERAGE user wanting to increase economy a little and add a little power and get rid of the emissions stuff it is my opinion (I told you everyone had one ) that all the chips are about equal. Best part about tuning them is getting rid of the EPA garbage, otherwise it is pointless IMO. If your plan is to fool the dealer into not knowing the truck was chipped it isn't possible. I know this has proboly been talked about before but could put put a chip on this motor and leave the regen filter in place? That way no codes would be set off? What is a good chip? I was told bully dog makes a good one?
